These sayings are based on the real phenomenon of conjoined or Siamese twins: two people who are born with parts of their bodies connected to one another. The term Siamese twins comes from a real set of conjoined twins who lived during the 1800s. Born in Siam (now the country of Thailand), the brothers' names were Chang and Eng. When they were 18 years old, they went to America and became public performers. People paid money to see the strangely connected brothers as they performed tricks to show their strength. Named the Siamese Twins by their publicists, the men toured Europe and were introduced to famous people such as the Queen of England. As soon as they retired from show business, they settled down on a farm in North Carolina. They married two sisters and had twenty-one children. The brothers died in their 60s. Chang and Eng were famous because they were so rare. The birth of conjoined twins does not happen very often. Doctors have different theories about how conjoined twins are born. Some doctors believe that a single egg splits in two but does not completely separate. Others claim that two eggs stick together somehow. Conjoined twins occur in approximately 1 of 50,000 births to 1 of 200,000 births. Half of these births are stillborn. This means that they die while they are still in their mother's womb. Of those that are born, only 25% of them survive. So seeing a set of conjoined twins is very unusual. If the Siamese twins Chang and Eng had lived today, doctors probably could have separated them easily. However, such operations are risky and may cause twins to develop health problems later on. So it may have been for the best that Chang and Eng lived during in the 1800s.
