Some dreams are more concrete and pragmatic (i.e. success in business, going to medical school), while some are more abstract (i.e. a better life, social justice). Nonetheless, all of these dreams can be grouped under the umbrella term “The American Dream.” This essay assignment requires you to analyze a character from Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun. First, choose a character and identify what that character’s particular dream is and how it relates to the broader concept of “The American Dream.” Then, analyze how the character’s traits hinder or help in the pursuit of his or her dreams.
