Essаy: Americаn Exceptiоnаlism:  This last pоrtiоn of the midterm will involve writing a complete five (5) to seven (7) paragraph essay that analyzes how American exceptionalism shaped the culture of the early American republic and the framing of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. You should make sure to define what we mean by exceptionalism and briefly explore some of the roots of exceptionalist thinking such as Winthrop and Crevecoeur. Most of your essay, however, should analyze the ways in which exceptionalism figured into the thinking of the founders of the American republic and the framers of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. Make sure your essay answers these questions:   1.) What did the founders of the nation and framers of the Constitution see as exceptional about the North American colonies in terms of geography, people, traditions, or capacity to generate a lasting democracy? (hint: Franklin, Madison, Yates) 2.) Were the colonies truly this different or were the framers/founders exaggerating a bit to make a case to the American public or to other groups? In what ways did the new Republic fail to live up to its mission of being exceptionalistic or different?  (hint: Lemuel Haynes, Abigail Adams)   3.) In what ways were the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights exceptional and new documents? And in what ways were they derived from other sources? In what ways did they fail to live up to larger notions and arguably exceptionalistic notions such as "all men are created equal"? Your essay should have three parts: 1) An introduction that introduces the topic, defines exceptionalism, and includes your main argument. 2) Some brief background on the topic of exceptionalism. 3) longer body that discusses specific examples from readings and class. Make sure to show me that you have done the readings. I will not be grading you on grammar and spelling, but your essay should be comprehendible and well argued. It should refer to specifics from the assigned readings, lectures, and activities in this class, and not other sources such as Wikipedia, old textbooks, things you found on Google, etc.    Ideally I would like to see this essay be comprised of somewhere between 470 and 700 words, although a longer essay does not necessarily connote quality. Make sure you are not just populated your essay with filler but using your space and time effectively.
