Chооse ONE оf the three following topics to compаre аnd contrаst in a brief essay. An introduction, conclusion, and thesis statement are not necessary here. Simply begin with the compare/contrast. Cite at least one piece of textual evidence from each story in your response.  1.  "The Lottery" & "A Rose for Emily" Topic: Compare how tradition plays a role in both stories. How is the town's tradition in "The Lottery" similar/different to how the townspeople view Emily and her family's traditions in "A Rose for Emily"? Why it works: Both stories show how sticking to tradition can be harmful, whether it’s through killing someone in a ritual or Emily being trapped by societal expectations and family heritage. 2.  "The Yellow Wallpaper" & "The Minister's Black Veil" Topic: Compare the theme of isolation in both stories. How do the physical and emotional isolation of the main characters show larger social or personal problems? Why it works: Both stories focus on characters whose isolation, whether mental or social, drives the plot. The black veil and the yellow wallpaper each represent this isolation. 3. "Hills Like White Elephants" & "The Yellow Wallpaper" Topic: Compare the way both stories explore the theme of freedom and personal choice. How do the female protagonists in each story respond to the constraints placed on them by society or their relationships? Why it works: Both stories center on the experiences of women and explore themes of freedom, repression, and desire.
