Applied Criticаl Thinking Essаy: Curriculum аnd Planning This questiоn has 4 parts (sub questiоns).   Thinking abоut curriculum planning. 1. Define curriculum 2. Describe your specific approach to curriculum in your classroom (Remember to be detailed and systematic in your answer.  Provide support for your ideas).   3. Now read the scenario below. Jane is 4 years old, she enters the classroom with a contagious smile and eagerness to learn every day.  She often opens a conversation with questions related to happenings she sees in the classroom currently or related to anticipated events/plans for that day.  Jane came to preschool this morning with a book from home.  “Look teacher!  I got a new book, it’s all about horses!  I’ll show you my favorite.  It’s a Shetland, just like the one my Grandpa has on his ranch.”  Her teacher exclaimed, “Wow!  I am so excited you found a book that tells you more about the horses that you like!”  The teacher then got down and held the book as Jane turned the pages until she found the picture she wanted to show.        Jane enjoys looking at books and talking about creations she has made.  She points out letters in words and often brings you papers with letters she has created asking “what word did I make?”  Yesterday she created letter forms with blocks and rocks.  She is often found carrying books from center to center.    Jane sings and follows actions to songs during circle time.   Jane is often found expressing ideas and information through telling her own stories and writing songs. Last week she created a song about fall leaves after working on a fall project in class as well as created a story about teeth after actively participating when one of the other student’s mother came to visit the classroom and teach the children the importance of brushing our teeth.    Jane walks around the room and playground and looks at every “planned experience” and the materials before enthusiastically making her choice to participate sometimes asking for alternative materials or options.  Jane helps, shares, and cooperates with peers and adults in the classroom.  She has also shown a high interest in talking about the weather, appropriate clothing for the season, and the water cycle.    She often tells her teacher that 2+2=4 and 4+4=8.  During snack time, she counts how many friends are at the table, as well as how many friends are still asleep from rest time.  She enjoys making patterns with various materials, but spends most of her time exploring the Tangrams that she picks from the choice shelf during center time.              During choice time yesterday she dumped out all of the shapes (approximately 12) onto the table and mixed them up.  Then, she picked up one piece at a time and carefully examined the edges until she found all the straight ones.  She placed the pieces one by one in the frame, sometimes turning them different ways until they matched the edges of the frame or other pieces. When coming across a piece that was mistakenly included in the box, but was from a different puzzle, Jane tried matching it by shape, color, and design before asking a teacher for assistance.  Once the puzzle was complete, Jane excitedly told her friends when she was done.    Jane is aware of the names of her peers and often enjoys reading the class book to her classmates.  While playing in groups, Jane verbally reminds others of the “rules” but quickly adapts them at the request or resistance of her friends.    On Monday, Jane was sitting on the floor alongside another preschooler in the class when another child, Jake, began to cry.  Jane reached out and patted Jake’s shoulder as the teacher picked him up to soothe him.  Jane stood up, went to the shelf, and returned with a tissue, which she handed to the teacher to wipe Jake's tears.  4. Describe how you plan for learning with Jane in mind.  You should provide a comprehensive answer and include all that applies to individualizing planning with the reasoning behind your decisions.
