Cаse Study: Osteоаrthritis DisjоintedOsteоаrthritis is the most common form of arthritis that affects humans and most mammals, should they live long enough. The incidence increases with age, and the underlying cause is linked to synovial cartilage deterioration. Osteoarthritis is confined to the joints and is distinctly different from the immune-mediated, and multisystem, disease known as rheumatoid arthritis. Mr. DJ is a delightful and vivacious 78 year-old widower who lives in a retirement center. A retired school teacher, he loves outdoor activities and is an accomplished swing dancer. Indeed, he is somewhat of a lady’s man and never misses the chance to take a whirl on the dance floor. A few weeks ago he developed pain and swelling in his right knee and the loss of mobility has changed his life. He is concerned because his late wife had suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, which greatly limited her activities and resulted in her death.
