Acаdemic Integrity. Brоаdly defined, аcademic integrity invоlves the cоmpletion of all academic endeavors and claims of as representative of one’s own efforts. Academic dishonesty includes cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, multiple submissions, complicity, solicitation, misrepresentation, and sharing class materials. In this class, I encourage you to make use of a tutor, tap available online resources, and collaborate with fellow students in pursuit of learning and practice. However, these behaviors are unacceptable while completing graded assignments that assess your understanding of course material. If you would like a refresher on how to maintain academic integrity in your own work, please review and consider enrolling in one of many USF Data Literacy Workshops. Sometimes I invite students to work together to practice and share ideas. Other times, this behavior is unacceptable. Here is a breakdown of where my expectations are: Expectations by Assignment Type Practice Exercises: Work together as much as you need. These are like going to the gym, you can go and watch other people work out, talk with your friends, etc. Or, you can go and work out. That's up to you as an adult to determine what level of practice you need. Quizzes: Work alone. You can prepare for quizzes collectively using study guides that I publish, textbook materials, etc. You should not prepare for quizzes using information taken from my course but published by another person or entity. You are absolutely not permitted to take quizzes collectively. Data Analysis Reports: Work together, but with caution. I think students benefit from helping each other understand instructions, directions, selecting variables, etc. However, it is not ok to take someone else's ideas, purchase work, conspire to purchase work, steal, copy and feed a draft through internet software to make it look unique, etc. It is also a violation of academic integrity to share your work in whole or in part, even if it's a blank "template." Exams: Work alone. You are absolutely not permitted to take exams collectively. Violations of the academic integrity policy are organized into four levels of severity, each with recommended sanctions. Each violation I encounter will be assessed for severity, reported to Undergraduate Studies for tracking, and applied a sanction that include forfeiting Outlier Tokens and failing an assignment, or, a F/FF in the course. Students who are reported for academic dishonesty have the right to request a meeting with me to discuss any official violation within 14 days. WhatsApp, GroupMe, and Student-to-Student Communication. While students may use digital communication tools (WhatsApp, GroupMe, etc.) to communicate with fellow students, it is important to remember that academic integrity policies still apply in these environments. Informing others about the contents of tests is prohibited by the official regulation, as is receiving unauthorized information about an examination. Students are expected and required to immediately report instances of such violations to the instructor. Course Hero / Chegg Policy. The USF Policy on Academic Integrity specifies that students may not use websites that enable cheating, such as by uploading or downloading material for this purpose. This does apply specifically to Chegg.com and CourseHero.com – almost any use of these websites (including uploading proprietary materials) constitutes a violation of the academic integrity policy. Generative AI: Course Policy on Acceptable Use. Generative AI tools refer to any artificial intelligence-powered software, program or application that can generate content, including but not limited to text, visuals, music, and other creative outputs (e.g., AI text generators, AI content rewriters, AI graphic generators, etc.). AI programs are not a replacement for human creativity, originality, and critical thinking. Writing is a craft that you must develop over time to develop your own individual voice. However, within limited circumstances, and with proper attribution, AI programs may be used as a tool for some parts of this course. Generative AI is NOT permitted for use on the following assignments: 1) quizzes, 2) exams, and 3) personal reflections, and 4) computation of statistics/data from and for Data Analysis Reports. Generative AI is permitted for use in helping with phrasing and interpretation on data analysis reports. It is expected that you are using AI tools as a supplemental resource (i.e., as an editor), not as the primary means of completing assignments. You must provide citations of each instance of AI-generated content submitted for class: USF Library resource on citing AI-generated content. You are responsible for the accuracy of your work and must cross-reference claims and statements with original sources and provide those citations and evidence. Remember: AI was designed to sound convincing, not to be truthful or accurate. I reserve the right schedule a meeting within a reasonable time period to evaluate your understanding of any work submitted for a grade in this course. Misuse of AI tools, including use of AI that undermines the student learning objectives of the course or assignment, failing to cite AI-generated content, relying too heavily on AI for work completion, or submitting inaccurate information generated by AI tools, will be subject to academic penalties. Consequences may range from a reduction in an individual assignment grade to larger academic sanctions per USF policy, depending on the severity of the violation. If students are unsure whether a tool they wish to use qualifies as a generative AI tool, or if they have questions regarding the allowable use of such tools, they should consult with the course instructor before using it. Online Exam Proctoring. All students must review the syllabus and the requirements, including the online terms and video testing requirements, to determine if they wish to remain in the course. Enrollment in the course is an agreement to abide by and accept all terms. Any student may elect to drop or withdraw from this course before the end of the drop/add period. Online exams and quizzes within this course may require online proctoring. Therefore, students will be required to have a webcam (USB or internal) with a microphone when taking an exam or quiz. Students understand that this remote recording device is purchased and controlled by the student and that recordings from any private residence must be done with the permission of any person residing in the residence. To avoid any concerns in this regard, students should select private spaces for the testing. Students with concerns may discuss location of an appropriate space for the recordings with their instructor or advisor. Students must ensure that any recordings do not invade any third-party privacy rights and accept all responsibility and liability for violations of any third-party privacy concerns. Students are strictly responsible for ensuring that they take all exams using a reliable computer and high-speed internet connection. Setup information will be provided prior to taking the proctored exam. To use Honorlock, students are required to download and install the Honorlock Google Chrome extension. Turnitin is an automated system which instructors may compare each student's assignment with web sites and a database of student papers that grows with each submission. After the assignment is processed, as instructor I receive a report from turnitin.com that states if and how another author’s work was used in the assignment.
