A group of students want to engineer bacteria to produce a protein coded for by a human gene (humans are eukaryotes; our cells are eukaryotic cells). They find the gene in human DNA and cut it out of the chromosome. They replace the human promoter & terminator with a bacterial promoter & terminator, then they add it to a plasmid. They insert the plasmid into bacterial cells. A) Did they have to add the bacterial promoter and terminator to the gene in order for it to be expressed in the bacteria? B) Based on what the students have done, will the bacterial cells be able to produce the human protein correctly?
