By studying bone remains from the past, anthropologists and archeologists can learn much about the health and nutrition of people that lived long ago. Some infectious agents leave specific changes in the bone that can lead to accurate diagnoses even thousands of years after a person has died. Tuberculosis is such a disease and bone infections with this agent are not only recognizable by the unaided eye, today the germ’s DNA can be identified even in burial remains that are hundreds of years old. While hiking in southern Indiana, several college students happened upon an alarming sight; a human skull and several long bones protruding from the ground. The discovery came two days after a heavy rain that had eroded a channel beside a parking lot near a reservoir. Authorities came to the site and began treating it as a crime scene. However, as the burial site was excavated, fragments of wood consistent with a coffin were found as were several square head nails. A number of glass beads were found in the area of the rib cage of the deceased, and near the bones of the right hand was an old picture wedged between two pieces of glass and sealed with beeswax. The person’s age at death was estimated to be between 40 and 50 based on dental wear, absence of long bone epiphyses and closure of cranial sutures.
