Baron and Straus (1989) characterize rape as a social phenomenon and theorize four different causes:− Gender : refers to women’s inferior economic, political, and legal status compared to men,− Pornography: can women to sex objects, promote male dominance, and encourage or condone sexual violence against women,− Social disorganization: social control and constraints and undermines freedom of individual behavior and self-determination,− Legitimization of violence: the support gives to violence, as portrayed in the mass media, violent sports, military exploits, and video games.
