While the disease is harmful to humans, and can be deadly under some conditions, the biggest problem is that it is highly lethal to draft animals (like cows, horses, and oxen). Therefore, for much of Africa’s history, cattle herding and the use of draft animals to plow fields were limited to specific high-altitude regions (like Ethiopia) that are pest-free due to the cold temperatures caused by the elevation.
