Georgia's state government claimed jurisdiction over the entire Cherokee territory and annexed (took control of) their land. The Cherokee Nation took its case to the United States Supreme Court. In the first of two rulings, Chief Justice John Marshall denied the Cherokee legal standing as U.S. citizens. However, in Worcester v. Georgia (1832), Marshall held that Georgia could not extend its law over the sovereign (self-governing) lands of the Cherokee nation, and it had no authority to displace the indigenous people. "The Acts of Georgia are repugnant (disgusting) to the Constitution, laws, and treaties of the United States....The Cherokee nation...is a distinct community, occupying its own territory... in which the laws of Georgia can have no force, and which the citizens of Georgia have no right to enter, but with the assent of the Cherokees themselves, or in conformity with treaties, and with the acts of Congress...."The Cherokee had won a major legal victory, but it proved to be a hollow one.
