In a final set of studies, potential roles of T and B cells to result in joint inflammation and destruction were examined. KxN arthritic mice were crossed together with mice that have AID deleted to result in KxN-AID+/- mice (these KxN arthritic mice express half the normal amount of AID; these mice are labeled as AID+/- in the Figure). KxN arthritic mice were also crossed together with mice that have CD40 deleted (these KxN arthritic mice have no CD40; these mice are labeled as CD40-/- in the Figure).  Serum from each of these lines of mice (and KxN arthritic controls) was injected into Rag-deficient recipients. Disease progression was monitored after serum injection as shown in the Figure. What are the functions of CD40 and AID under normal conditions?
