Therefore, if it’s in your power to save someone at little cost to yourself, then you’re obligate to save this person. Notice, though, that the citizens of rich countries can save a person at little cost to themselves by giving money to effective charities. That’s because the citizens of rich countries can easily afford to give a few thousand dollars to aid organization and it’s possible to save a person’s life in the developing world by giving a few thousand dollars to an effective aid organization. After all, researchers estimate that a $5,000 donation to the Against Malaria Foundation, an organization that provides anti-malarial bed nets to people in Sub-Saharan Africa, will save one life. It follows that the citizens of a rich country are obligated to give money to effective charities.”
