Specific Questiоns: This sectiоn hаs 7 questiоns. Answer two (two) questions only.  S1. Whаt is the most defensible definition of rаce/ethnicity? What is the best measurement strategy for that definition, and why? What role do institutions play in constructing racial/ethnic categories and in sustaining group identity and consciousness? S2. Those who are concerned about recent episodes of democratic backsliding wonder what, if anything, our constitutions can do to preserve democracy.  How are democracies vulnerable, and what can constitutions do to help?  Identify at least three distinct threats and assess the available constitutional solutions.   S3. Why has clientelism weakened in some countries but less so in others despite similar levels of urbanization and economic modernization? Assess alternative explanations and draw on examples from Comparative Politics. S4. Many studies have found a correlation between economic development and democracy, but there is little agreement on the causal mechanisms underlying this relationship. Discuss and critique three prominent explanations for this correlation. Which explanation do you find more persuasive, and why? S5. Discuss the details, pros and cons, and the evolution of party organizational models in advanced democracies, from Duverger's cadre party and mass party, to Kirchheimer's catch-all party, and to Katz and Mair's cartel party. Where do these party organizations stand today?  Have political parties in advanced democracies settled into the cartel model, reverted to an earlier type, or given rise to a genuinely new organizational form? Defend your answer to the last question with real-world examples. S6. What does the scholarly literature tell us about what motivates generals to establish military rule, the extreme form of the armed forces’ political interference?  Are militaries ever selfless “guardians” whose purpose is to save the state from incompetent and corrupt civilians? Or are they led by “praetorian” self-interest?  As you address these questions, provide some contrasting examples of foreign, economic, and/or social policies under different types of military governance.  Finally, using specific examples, explain the main variables that shape how armed forces are reformed and subordinated to civilian control following periods of military rule. S7. Why and how do political institutions change?  In your answer, compare and assess how historical institutionalism and rational choice institutionalism address this question.  Which approach do you find most persuasive, and why?  Support your position with real-world examples.
