Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating disease that affects the central nervous system. Onset of symptoms typically occurs in early adulthood; however, pediatric cases account for up to 5% of all diagnoses and may have unique exposures that impact disease onset and trajectory. A case-control study to investigate exposures associated with pediatric MS enrolled 312 cases identified through pediatric hospitals and 456 controls who were siblings of the cases. Low iron intake was recorded among 10% of the cases and 7.5% of the controls. What is the observed association between low iron intake and pediatric MS in this study? Disease status Exposure to iron Yes (Cases) No (Controls) Yes (low-iron intake) 31 34 No (no iron intake) Total 312 456 1. Using the formula for Odds ratio (3 points) , find the OR. 2.
