Natural selection and speciation An island bird population has inherited variation in beak depth. During a long drought, mostly large, hard seeds remain. Birds with deeper beaks survive and reproduce more successfully, and alleles associated with deeper beaks become more common over generations. Later, a small group colonizes a second island. After many generations, the two populations can no longer mate successfully with one another.
