We should have had this out much earlier, but that's on neither of us. We have a comfortable estimate that thousands of people will be walking in Pittsburgh at our 2026 Pittsburgh Autism Speaks Walk (June 5th at Schenley Park in Oakland has been confirmed). Please put “right in the heart of Pittsburgh” somewhere. We also need to emphasize that their dollars help to fund advocacy, awareness, family services and critical research. As you know, we're cutting many of the smaller walks in the outlying counties this year, so we need to address this as well. Maybe out of common courtesy, business ethics, and just being human, we should have reached out to these areas first, but it's too late for that now, so they'll have to find out via this press release. Walks pulling in less than $100,000 were cut—let's not put that to press, but we need to explain that one large Walk cuts down on the operating costs of hosting smaller Walks (including website maintenance, printed materials, kickoffs and awards, etc.). Maybe say something like “we concluded that it makes more sense to give back within smaller communities to ensure that we are being true to our mission, and making the best use of the dollars you all have worked so hard to raise” and just include some of those costs I mentioned above. We expect that the individual teams will complain about not being able to come to Pittsburgh, and we certainly still want them to raise money, so maybe head this off with “We certainly understand that for many, travel will be a barrier. If that is the case, your fundraising dollars can be managed through online donations on your personal Walk webpage, or mailed to the Western PA Chapter.” Also throw this in: “Over time, we will schedule town halls, sensory fairs, and other family services and community events that will give your community the individualized support you need from us.” This will buy us some time until we actually do these things, pending costs, of course. Personally, all these sound more expensive than maintaining local annual Walks and focusing on awareness, but who am I?We can't forget about fundraising materials!
