The Great Prairie Chicken, a bird, once had a population in the millions in Illinois. In a few decades, the prairies of Illinois were converted to farmland leaving the Great Prairie Chicken with a loss of habitat. As a result the their numbers dropped down to around 1,000 and researchers found that several alleles had reached fixation in this population.
