The nurse practitioner is evaluating a 16-year old female in the clinic with a complaint of sudden onset, severe unilateral pelvic pain with radiation to the back and right thigh. The client’s pain developed after she completed a 10K run during cross-country training at school. The client has a prior history of small ovarian cysts, reports normal menstrual cycles (LMP 2 weeks prior), has no history of pregnancy, no surgical history, and is not sexually active. On physical examination, the client demonstrates adnexal tenderness and is in moderate distress. She is afebrile and her vital signs are within normal limits. A pregnancy test is ordered and is negative; therefore, a doppler ultrasound is ordered and demonstrates an enlarged right ovary with significantly decreased flow. What condition does the NP suspect?
