The pain specialist has prescribed 600 mg Neurontin (gabapentin) q8hr for bilateral lower extremity neuropathy caused by poorly-controlled Type 2 Diabetes. Gabapentin is available as labeled below, with a maximum safe dosage of 2,400 mg/day. The patient is also instructed to take an additional 600 mg QHS for pain that is 7 or above on a 10 point scale. Last night at bedtime, the patient’s pain was an 8 out of 10. The nurse knows the patient took a total of mg of gabapentin yesterday. This (is/is not) a safe medication dosing plan for this patient.
