The patient, a 49-year-old woman, was brought to the emergency department (ED) by her husband. She complained of shortness of breath and chest pain. She smokes 1/2 pack of cigarettes per day. Chest X-ray revealed pulmonary pneumonia and the patient was admitted for antibiotic therapy to treat Klebsiella Pneumoniae. On day two the patient developed acute respiratory failure and she was placed on mechanical ventilation. On day 3 the provider documented ventilator associated pneumonia due to MRSA. She was treated with aggressive IV antibiotic therapy and subsequently weaned from the ventilator. She was discharged home in good condition. Code(s):
