The patient is diagnosed with a nonunion of the 5th metatarsal and the physician recommends surgical intervention. The patient agrees and undergoes an ORIF across the fracture using a fixation screw and is placed in a short leg cast on NWB status for an additional 4 weeks. After the four weeks, the cast is removed and the patient is re-imaged showing successful healing of the fracture. The physician returns the patient to the athletic trainer for rehabilitation. During the initial weeks of rehabilitation, the patient progresses steadily. After 7 weeks of treatment, during the final functional phase of rehabilitation, the patient begins to experience pain with full eversion and during running.
