Believing that the items somehow belonged to her or were being “held for safekeeping,” Dana picked up the wallet, removed several hundred dollars in cash, and placed it into her own bag. She then took Victor’s watch and put it on her wrist. Shortly thereafter, Victor returned and confronted Dana, demanding his property back. Dana appeared frightened and confused, yelling, “You can’t take what’s mine!” When Victor stepped closer, Dana shoved him forcefully, causing him to fall backward and strike his head on a table, resulting in a deep cut requiring medical attention. Later that night, Dana wandered into a nearby office building that was partially open for a late-night event. Inside, Dana approached a receptionist’s desk where a checkbook had been left unattended. Believing she had authority to access the account because she was “in charge of the company,” Dana took a blank check, filled it out payable to herself for $2,000, and signed the name of the company’s owner without authorization. As Dana exited the building, she knocked over a decorative candle display in the lobby. Surveillance footage later showed Dana staring at the small flame and stating, “This is how we reset everything.” She then picked up a nearby stack of papers and placed them onto the flame, watching as it grew.
