You are dispatched to a residence for an unconscious person. Upon arrival, you find a 35 yo male on the couch. His vital signs are: P, 72 beats/min; respirations, 4 to 6 breaths/min; BP, 122/70 mm Hg; skin, cool and clammy; pupils, pinpoint and unresponsive to any stimulus. He shows no signs of trauma. While you and your partner are preparing to move the patient to the cot, a woman enters the house. She asks what is wrong with her “baby” and insists you put him back on the couch. She says that she is his mother and has been “Taking care of my baby for his whole life.” When you are trying to gather history from her, she states that her son takes “pills for his pain” and she says that she does not want you to take him to the hospital.
